Towards ‘the Best of Both’: What Learning Activitie are Conducted Where?

The present study is aimed at investigating participants’ responses to, and evaluation of, the different types of learning activities relative to the delivery mode. This would enable identification of learning activities best conducted face-to-face and those that flourish online. Participants recruited for the study were divided into two cohorts. Group one attended hybrid instruction type 1 during the first three sessions and attended hybrid instruction type 2 the following three sessions, whereas group two did the reverse. This way, participants experienced both online and face-to-face delivery of each type of the learning activity and evaluate for themselves which learning activity they believe to be more appropriate for which mode. Prior to the end of the study, a questionnaire exploring students’ evaluation of the learning activities relative to the two different hybrid formats was administered to both groups and interviews with a number of sample participants were conducted. It was found that learning activities such as lectures and presentation of group discussion are best conducted face-to-face, whereas group discussion, quizzes, and assignment submissions are better conducted online. As for consultations with the lecturer, both modes appear to be viable. Key-words: Hybrid instruction, Blended learning, Online learning, face-to-face instruction.
